Position Summary:
Under limited supervision of the Executive Director, the Operations Manager will oversee Guest Services and inspire visitors by creating a memorable experience at the Discovery Center. The Operations Manager will be responsible for smooth and efficient daily operation of the Discovery Center, including achieving service and fiscal goals in a fast-paced and high-volume environment while maintaining quality standards.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform these physical movements: stand for extended periods of time; use hands to operate, activate, prepare, inspect, place, detect, and position objects; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear; walk. The employee occasionally is required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift, push, and/or move displays and other objects weighing up to 50 pounds around the Discovery Center. The position may also include extended periods of time outside in all types of year-round Florida weather and climate, as well as time spent on the water in our Eco-tour vessel.
Primary Responsibility:
The Operations Manager’s primary responsibility is ensuring a positive guest experience throughout all aspects of the operation. He/she will take the lead in driving excellence in the guest experience, ticket sales, retail sales and will oversee all guest relations. He/she must embrace and model outstanding customer service, run efficient business operations and maintain high employee morale.
The Operations Manager also serves as a role model to the front line staff leading by example, coaching and motivating a team of employees and volunteers each day in a year-round operation. He/she will be responsible for the development, implementation, training, daily management of floor operations and exhibit interpretation.
This position works with the Executive Director to manage the daily operations of the Center, supporting guest experience teams to ensure consistency. Duties include:
- - Understanding and actively managing environmental, health, safety and security responsibilities
- - Overseeing general admissions and advance ticket purchases for school groups, programs, tours and special events
- - Scheduling staff and volunteers for daily operations and special events
- - Supervising team leads and associates
- - With Education Coordinator, ensuring all animal and collection procedures are followed daily
- - Overseeing ticketing and Point of Sale transactions, including daily reconciliation, cash management and deposits
- - Developing and implementing quality training programs for all staff and volunteers
- - Using best retail practices to manage retail inventory, merchandising and displays
- - As directed, ordering and managing various inventories and supplies
- - Developing and maintaining effective relationships with vendors
- - Managing operational budgets
- - Maintaining a professional presence while performing duties
- - Performing other duties as assigned
- - Maintaining a positive attitude that fosters a fun and productive work environment
Experience Required:
- - Associates Degree or 5 years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience; Bachelor’s degree preferred
- - Completion of a satisfactory DCF Level II Background Screening
- - Experience managing a small team in a high volume guest-focused environment
- - Ability to handle confidential and financial information
- - Positive attitude that fosters a fun and productive work environment
- - Demonstrated experience developing continuous improvement within an organization across all functions
- - Strong written and verbal skills
- - Computer literacy with MS Office Suite is required. Experience with retail or admission ticketing software preferred
- - Ability to work weekends and holidays
Familiarity with coastal ecosystems is helpful but not required. A passion for the environment is highly desired. Salary is commensurate with level of experience. Health insurance, life insurance, and retirement savings programs are available to full-time employees.
