A Cleveland man has finally reached a $1.3 million settlement against Cuyahoga County and the city itself for compensation after his 23-year-old murder conviction was overturned.

On Tuesday, the County Council agreed to the award for damages involving 62-year-old Evin King, who was falsely convicted in 1994 for the slaying of Crystal Hudson, who he was in a relationship with at the time, Cleveland.com reports. Last year he filed a lawsuit holding that a large part of his life had been stifled by serving time for a crime he didn’t commit.

As part of the deal, King will receive $750,000 from the county with Cleveland paying out $550,000 in damages.

It was uncovered during the trial that King’s DNA didn’t match the semen inside Hudson’s body and there was a lack of physical evidence linking him to the crime. There also was a lack of technology to help clear his association with the crime. His law team maintained that detectives, and the county coroner at the time, Elizabeth Balraj conspired to link King to the case.
