Similar to D.C’s recent mural, and the others that have popped up since, St. Petersburg now has a street with giant letters spelling “Black Lives Matter.”

The City of St. Petersburg worked in collaboration with the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, local volunteers and muralists to make the artwork a reality. The new mural is located at 2240 9th Ave S, in front of the museum.

A dedication ceremony is planned for Friday, June 19 at 9:30 a.m. which is Juneteenth, the date the last slaves in the U.S. were notified of their freedom. The event will feature speakers like Mayor Rick Kriseman, Congressman Charlie Crist, State Senator Darryl Rouson, Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch, and others.

St. Petersburg’s new mural now puts the city in the same company as other cities that have recently dedicated entire street blocks to the Black Lives Matter movement, like Dallas, New York and Los Angeles.
