Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the ex-wife of former South African president Nelson Mandela, passed away today at age 81. A statement released by the family reads that she had “died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year. She succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones.” Madikizela-Mandela’s former husband Nelson Mandela spent 27 years as a political prisioner in South Africa, during which time she continued their shared work of dismantling apartheid. Upon his release from prison, Mandela and his Madikizela-Mandela walked hand-in-hand, a moment that was captured in an iconic photograph. Click here for full article.
