When the now viral video of University of Alabama student Harley Barber shouting racial slurs first made its rounds on social media, fellow student Brittney Thomas says she was in complete shock. “Wow, she is really bold to have recorded herself saying these things,” the African-American junior from Atlanta, Georgia recalled thinking at the time. Thomas, 20, was enjoying her day off after classes were canceled due to inclement weather. It also happened to be a national federal holiday: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
